Aluminium Extrusion from China: Which GB Standard Actually Governs Your Profile

Last updated: 5 October 2026.

Quick answer. Two recommended standards cover most extruded aluminium from China: GB/T 6892-2023 for general industrial profiles and the GB/T 5237 series (2017 editions) for architectural profiles, with GB/T 14846-2014 for dimensional tolerances. Search the register by 挤压型材, not 铝型材: the short form returns almost nothing.

Aluminium extrusion from China: the GB standards that actually govern industrial and architectural profiles, which editions are current, and how to search the register.

Every standard number, title, status and date on this page comes from the National Standards Information Public Service Platform (`std.samr.gov.cn`), the Chinese state platform that publishes the national standard register, searched by title on 5 October 2026. The searches, the counts they returned and the retrieved rows are recorded in the source table at the end.

The short version

An aluminium extrusion bought from China is usually specified against one of two things, and they are not interchangeable:

Around those two sit a tolerance standard (GB/T 14846-2014), a finish standard set (the GB/T 8013 series plus GB/T 19822-2024 for hard anodising), and a stack of application-specific profile standards for rail, automotive, bridge, roof, marine, heat-exchanger and aerospace work.

Three findings from the register are worth a buyer's attention before anything else on this page:

  1. The architectural profile parts were once mandatory standards and are now recommended ones. Every 2004 edition in the GB 5237 family is numbered GB (mandatory) and every one of them is abolished; the current editions are GB/T (recommended). The register shows nine mandatory entries in that family, all superseded.
  2. The word for "extrusion die" returns nothing. A title search for 挤压模具 returns 0 records. Die design is not a titled national standard.
  3. The obvious short search term is a trap. A title search for 铝型材 — the everyday Chinese word for an aluminium profile — returns 1 record, and that record is a machining centre, not a profile specification. The productive term is 挤压型材.

How this page fits the rest of this site

Eleven documents and a long list of numbers are easier to place if the neighbours are named:

How this page was built, and where it stops

The platform searched here is a title index. A term either appears in a standard's title or it does not; the search is not a full-text search, and a standard that governs extrusions without naming them in the title will not appear in these counts.

Two consequences the reader should carry through the tables below:

The register is also the only source used. No ASTM, EN, ISO or JIS number appears on this page, and no mapping between the GB system and any other system is attempted, because no mapping was retrieved from a source.

What the register returns for extrusion

Title searches run on 5 October 2026. "Reported" is the total the platform prints; "retrieved" is the number of rows actually returned and read.

铝合金aluminium alloy (too broad)543200 (page cap)114842

Two disclosures about that table, both ours. The 铝合金 row is included only to show why it is unusable: 543 matches is the register saying the word is too broad to plan around, and this page read the platform's first 200 rows and stopped, so that row is not used for any count below. The 铝合金建筑型材 row shows a platform discrepancy — a reported total of 34 with 35 rows returned. This page repeats both numbers rather than reconciling them, and treats the family as "about 34–35 records".

The two profile families the register actually separates

Read the structural difference between the two families, because it drives how a specification should be written. GB/T 6892-2023 is one document for industrial profiles. The architectural family is split by finish, so "specify GB/T 5237" is not a complete instruction — the buyer has to name the part that matches the finish being bought. Part 4's effective date is two months ahead of its siblings, which is the kind of detail that shows up in a certificate.

The predecessor editions are still circulating, and the register lists them as abolished:

StandardTitleStatusEffective (as issued)

If a supplier's certificate cites GB/T 6892-2015 or a GB 5237.x-2004 part, it is citing a withdrawn edition. This page states the editions and dates the register prints; it does not state whether any particular certificate is acceptable, which depends on the buyer's own specification and on whatever scheme the buyer is working to.

Tolerances: a separate standard from the profile standard

The register keeps dimensional deviation in its own document rather than folding it into the profile specification:

StandardTitleNatureStatusIssuedEffective
GB/T 14846-2014Dimensional deviation of aluminium and aluminium-alloy extruded profilesrecommendedin force2014-12-052015-05-01

GB/T 14846-1993same titlerecommendedabolished1993-12-301994-06-01

Two related documents the register files next to it, both currently in force: GB/T 4436-2012, Dimensions and permissible deviations of aluminium and aluminium-alloy tubes (effective 2013-10-01), for the tube form; and, for extruded bar rather than profile, GB/T 3191-2019, Aluminium and aluminium-alloy extruded bars (effective 2020-05-01), which supersedes the 2010 and 1998 editions.

This page does not reproduce any tolerance value from any of them. What the register establishes is only that the tolerance question has its own standard number, which is why "the profile standard" and "the tolerance standard" need to be named separately on a purchase specification.

The finish specification: which standard number to name

Finish is where the register is richest, and where a specification most often goes vague. The GB/T 8013 series is the film standard; the numbers below are the ones the register shows in force.

StandardTitleStatusIssuedEffective
GB/T 8013.1-2018anodic oxidation coatings and organic polymer films on aluminium — part 1: anodic oxidation filmsin force2018-05-142019-02-01

GB/T 26296-2010Defects in anodic oxidation films and organic polymer coatings on aluminium and its alloysin force2011-01-142011-11-01

The test methods sit in their own numbered series, and the current parts are recent: GB/T 12967.1-2020 (abrasion resistance), GB/T 12967.3-2022 (salt-spray test), GB/T 12967.4-2022 (light-and-heat resistance) and GB/T 12967.6-2022 (colour difference and appearance), all effective from 2022-10-01 apart from part 1 (2021-04-01). Corrosion assessment of the same films is covered by GB/T 42514-2023 (chart method) and GB/T 42544-2023 (grid method), both effective 2023-12-01.

Nothing in this section states a film thickness, a coating weight, a salt-spray duration or a colour tolerance. Those numbers live inside the standards, and the platform does not publish them.

Thermal-barrier profiles: the one place the parts buy you something

For architectural work, the register treats a thermal-barrier profile as more than "an insulated profile". Three separate documents apply, and they are all in force:

StandardTitleEffective
GB/T 5237.6-2017architectural profiles, part 6: thermal-barrier profiles2018-07-01
GB/T 23615.1-2017Thermal insulation materials for use with architectural aluminium profiles — part 1: polyamide profiles2018-05-01
GB/T 23615.2-2017part 2: polyurethane thermal-insulation adhesive2018-05-01
GB/T 28289-2012Test method for composite performance of aluminium-alloy thermal-barrier profiles2013-02-01
GB/T 34482-2017Determination method for heat transfer coefficient of aluminium-alloy thermal-barrier profiles for buildings2018-07-01

The practical reading: the barrier material has its own standard, by material type — a polyamide strip and a polyurethane adhesive are covered by different documents. If a specification only cites the profile part and never names the barrier material, it has left the defining component of a thermal-barrier profile unspecified.

Application-specific profile standards in force

Beyond the two general families, the register holds profile standards written around a single end use. The current editions:

StandardTitle (self-translated)Effective

GB/T 34493-2017free-cutting aluminium-alloy extruded bars2018-05-01

Two further documents in force sit under the same subject and are worth knowing by number rather than by detail: GB/T 37616-2019, axial-force-controlled fatigue test method for aluminium-alloy extruded profiles (effective 2020-05-01), and GB/T 32790-2016, test method for weld-seam quality of aluminium and aluminium-alloy extrusions (effective 2017-07-01).

The alloy system itself is standardised separately, and a profile spec that names an alloy without these three is using an abbreviation the register does not define: GB/T 3190-2020 (chemical composition of wrought aluminium and aluminium alloys, effective 2021-02-01), GB/T 16474-2011 (designation system, effective 2012-10-01) and GB/T 16475-2023 (temper designation system, effective 2024-03-01).

For the window or door that an architectural profile ends up inside, the product-level standard is a different document again: GB/T 8478-2020, Aluminium alloy doors and windows, effective 2021-02-01, superseding the 2008 edition.

Where the register is thin, and two searches that mislead

Three negative results, each verified as a title search on 5 October 2026:

The correct reading of a zero is narrow: it means the register holds no national standard whose title contains that term. It does not mean the product is unregulated, unstandardised or unavailable.

Mandatory, recommended, and what the register actually shows

The register prints a nature field for each record, and in this family it is informative:

ObservationWhat the register shows
The two general profile familiesentirely recommended (GB/T) — the industrial profile standard and all six architectural parts
The old architectural partsmandatory (GB 5237.x-2004), all seven entries abolished
Other mandatory entries in the familyGB 21351-2014 and GB 21351-2008, energy consumption limits per unit product for architectural aluminium profiles — both abolished
Mandatory entries still in force nearbyGB 30078-2013, safety production specification for wrought aluminium and aluminium-alloy ingots (effective 2014-11-01), and GB 30079-2026, safety specification for the production of aluminium and aluminium-alloy plate, strip and foil (effective 2026-09-01)
Mandatory entries abolished elsewhere in the wider familyGB 26756-2011, energy consumption limits per unit product for hot-extruded aluminium and alloy bars

Read together, that table says something a buyer can use: in this family the compulsory Chinese national standards are about production safety and, historically, energy consumption — not about the geometry or the finish of the profile. The profile and finish standards a specification leans on are recommended standards, and their authority comes from being named in the contract, not from being mandatory.

This page does not claim that Chinese exports of extrusions are unregulated. It states only what the register shows about the nature field of the records it returned.

Editions the register already marks as replaced

A register that lists abolished editions alongside current ones is useful precisely because it shows what is still in circulation. Two current items will be superseded on dates the register already prints:

StandardTitleIssuedEffectiveSupersedes
GB/T 26006-2026extruded tubes, bars and profiles for marine use2026-05-252026-12-01GB/T 26006-2010

GB/T 20504-2026measurement of image clarity of the same films2026-05-252026-12-01GB/T 20504-2006

If a purchase specification is being written now for delivery after 1 December 2026, the marine profile and the two film-measurement methods are the three records whose numbers will have moved.

What this page does not do

⚠️ Source-scope disclosure. This page uses one source: the Chinese national standard register as published on `std.samr.gov.cn`. That is deliberate — it keeps every number on the page traceable to the register that issues it — but it has two costs the reader should know. First, the searches are title searches: a record appears only if the search term is in the title, so these counts are a lower bound on the relevant body of work, not a census. Second, no second publisher was used to cross-check any record, and the register itself prints one internal discrepancy (a reported total of 34 against 35 returned rows for one term), which this page repeats rather than reconciles.

⚠️ Translation. The register publishes Chinese titles only. Every English title on this page is this page's own translation, marked as such, and the Chinese term searched is shown alongside the result in every table. No Chinese-language source text was translated as content: the register supplies standard numbers, titles, nature, state and dates, and nothing else was taken from it. This page consequently contains Chinese characters, which are the search terms and the titles the register actually uses.

⚠️ What was NOT used. No supplier, marketplace, trade publication, consultancy, testing laboratory or certification body contributed a fact to this page. The Bing autosuggest demand evidence behind choosing this topic is recorded in the working notes at the end and is not a source for any claim above.

Frequently asked questions

Which GB standard covers aluminium extrusions from China?

For general industrial extruded profiles the current edition is GB/T 6892-2023, issued 7 September 2023 and effective 1 April 2024. For architectural profiles the current editions are the six GB/T 5237.x-2017 parts, split by finish, with dimensional deviation in a separate standard, GB/T 14846-2014. All three are recommended (GB/T) standards, not mandatory ones.

Is the Chinese standard for architectural aluminium profiles mandatory?

It used to be. Every 2004 edition in that family carries a GB number, which marks a mandatory national standard, and the register lists all of those entries as abolished. The editions in force are all GB/T — recommended — including all six current parts. What makes a recommended standard binding in practice is being named in the purchase contract.

Why does searching "aluminium profile" in Chinese give almost nothing?

Because the short form is not how the register titles these documents. A title search for 铝型材 — the everyday word for an aluminium profile — returns one record, and it is a machining centre for curtain-wall profiles, not a profile specification. The productive title term is 挤压型材, "extruded profile", which returns 23 records. For the architectural family specifically, search 铝合金建筑型材.

Is there a GB standard for extrusion dies?

Not by title. A title search for 挤压模具 returns 0 records on the platform searched here on 5 October 2026. That means no national standard carries that term in its title; it does not mean the die is uncontrolled. In practice the die is specified by its drawing, the alloy, the press and the test methods, so the specification has to carry that information itself.

How do I know whether a certificate cites a current edition?

Check the number's year suffix against the register. GB/T 6892-2015 and the GB 5237.x-2004 parts are abolished editions and are still seen on paperwork; the current ones are GB/T 6892-2023 and the GB/T 5237.x-2017 parts. Two records also change on 1 December 2026 — GB/T 26006-2026 for marine profiles and GB/T 20503-2026 and GB/T 20504-2026 for film measurement — so a specification written for delivery after that date should name the new numbers.
