Stamping Standards in China: What Governs a Stamped Part

Last updated: 5 November 2026.

Direct answer. A stamped part in China is governed mainly by recommended standards: four tolerance standards plus burr height define its geometry, and two general specifications define the part. Only two current mandatory standards touch the press shop, the cold-stamping safety code and the press-shop safety rules, and neither covers the part.

What governs a stamped part in China: the four tolerance standards, burr height, two general specifications, and the only mandatory stamping records in the GB registry.

If you ask three suppliers in China for a stamping quotation, you will usually get three drawings back with three different reference standards on them — and often the same standard with different years attached. The registry is a fast way to see which of those references are current, which were withdrawn, and which were never about presswork in the first place.

This page is a reading of one query against the national standards registry: keyword 冲压 (stamping), run on 5 November 2026. It returned 39 records and 39 were retrieved — no paging shortfall. This is what they actually say, and what a buyer should do with them.

What the registry returns

Records returned by the query 冲压39
Records retrieved into the full set39
Current (现行)26
Withdrawn (废止)13
Mandatory (强制性)4
Mandatory and current3

The shape of that table is the first useful fact: two thirds of the family is current, and only four records in the entire set are mandatory. A buyer who assumes "GB" means "compulsory" will misread almost every line.

The seven standards that define a stamped part

For a cold-stamped metal part, the geometry obligations sit in five documents, backed by two general specifications. These are the ones a drawing should name.

CodeTitle (registry text)NatureStatusEffective

GB/T 30571-2014金属冷冲压件 通用技术条件推荐性现行2014-12-01

Read as a set, the logic is straightforward. Three standards cover what the drawing declares — linear tolerance, angular tolerance, and geometric tolerance where the drawing stays silent. One covers what happens when a dimension carries no tolerance at all. One covers the edge condition. The last two are the general specification and the design-feature standard: what a cold-stamped metal part must be, independent of any individual dimension.

The commercial consequence is that none of these is legally compulsory. What makes them binding is the purchase order. If the drawing does not cite them, nothing in Chinese law requires the supplier to apply them — and a part that "looks right" can fail a tolerance that was never named. This is the single most common documentation gap we see in stamping RFQs, and it costs nothing to close.

Where the mandatory obligations actually sit

Four records in the family are mandatory; three are current.

CodeTitle (registry text)StatusEffectiveWhat it covers
GB 13887-2008冷冲压安全规程现行2009-10-01Safety code for cold stamping
GB 8176-2012冲压车间安全生产通则现行2013-06-01General safety rules for the press shop
GB 24910-2010钢板冲压扣件现行2011-06-01Steel-plate stamping clips (a product standard)
GB 13887-1992冷冲压安全规程废止1993-08-01Superseded by the 2008 edition

Two of the three current mandatory records regulate the workplace, not the workpiece: the cold-stamping safety code and the press-shop safety rules. They are obligations on the factory — guard configuration, operating practice, shop-floor safety management — and a buyer auditing a supplier can ask for them by number.

The third, GB 24910-2010, is a product standard for steel-plate stamping clips rather than a general requirement on stamped parts. It is worth knowing about because it is the one place in this family where a mandatory document attaches to a physical stamped product; it does not generalise to brackets, housings or panels.

There is therefore no mandatory part-level standard for stamped metal parts in this family. That is a documentary fact about the registry, not a statement about quality — the quality obligation comes from the contract, and the contract has to name the standard.

Versions that still appear on old drawings

Thirteen of the 39 records are withdrawn. Most are earlier editions of the seven standards above, which means an old drawing quoting "2002" or "1994" is quoting a document the registry marks as superseded.

Two entries deserve a second look. The press-shop safety standard changed prefix from GB/T to GB between the 1997 and 2012 editions — that prefix change is exactly when a recommended document became mandatory, and it is easy to miss when an old drawing is copied forward. And the needle-bearing series shows the registry's product-side behaviour: the same subject appears three times across 1991, 1998, 2009 and then settles on 2017 and 2019 editions.

The translation trap: three records that are not presswork

Title searches in Chinese return homonyms, and 冲压 is no exception. Three of the 39 records use the word in a different sense:

There is also a group that is real stamping but is a product standard rather than a process standard: GB/T 28268-2012 for stamped bearing cages, GB/T 290-2017 and GB/T 12764-2019 for needle bearings with stamped outer rings, GB/T 62.3-2004 for stamped wing nuts, and GB 24910-2010 for steel-plate stamping clips. Those matter if you are buying the product; they do not tell a press shop how to make your bracket.

Anyone who treats the raw hit count as "39 stamping standards" will overcount the process family by roughly a quarter.

Hot stamping, lines and shop-floor standards

The registry indexes the process-engineering side separately from the part side, and this is where most of the recent records sit.

Three of these are worth flagging to a buyer. The hot-stamping triplet splits cleanly into process (36961), input material (34566) and line integration (44949) — useful when a supplier claims "hot stamping capability", because the claim can be checked against three different documents. GB/T 34360-2017 on material consumption quotas is the standard behind a supplier's material-yield figure, which is often where a quotation's hidden margin sits. And GB/T 32151.51-2025, effective 1 February 2026, brings press shops into the greenhouse-gas accounting series — relevant if your customer asks for a carbon figure rather than just a price.

What to put on a stamping RFQ

The five fields below are our editorial judgement, not a citation of any standard. They exist because the registry shows where the ambiguity sits.

  1. The four tolerance references, by year. Linear, angular, geometric-where-unspecified, and untoleranced limit deviations. Quoting a year is the whole point of the exercise.
  2. The burr condition. Which side, and against GB/T 33217-2016 rather than an adjective.
  3. The general specification. GB/T 30571-2014 as the default, or your own drawing note where it is stricter.
  4. Material and its delivery condition, stated as a grade plus a standard, not a trade name.
  5. Whether the part is hot- or cold-formed. If hot, the process and material standards above apply and the tooling conversation is different.

A supplier's answer tells you as much as the part: a quotation that returns the same five items, with years, is a quotation written by someone who reads drawings.

No new query was run for this page beyond the single stamping lookup described above. No price, lead time, tolerance value, tariff or certification claim appears on this page: the registry records state codes, titles, nature, status and dates, and this page states only those.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a mandatory Chinese standard for stamped parts?

Not for stamped parts generally. Of the four mandatory records in the 冲压 family, three are current: GB 13887-2008 and GB 8176-2012 regulate press-shop safety, and GB 24910-2010 is a product standard for steel-plate stamping clips. Every part-level tolerance and specification standard in the family is recommended.

Which standards should a stamping drawing cite?

GB/T 13914-2013 for dimensional tolerance, GB/T 13915-2013 for angular tolerance, GB/T 13916-2013 for untoleranced shape and position, GB/T 15055-2021 for limit deviations on untoleranced dimensions, and GB/T 33217-2016 for burr height, with GB/T 30571-2014 as the general specification.

Why do quotes still reference 2002 editions?

Because the 2002 editions of the dimensional, angular and untoleranced-geometry standards were superseded by 2013 editions, and the untoleranced limit-deviation standard was revised in 2021. A drawing citing 2002 names a withdrawn document, even if the part it describes is identical.

Does 冲压 include hot stamping of high-strength steel?

The registry splits it: GB/T 36961-2018 covers general technology for ultra-high-strength steel hot stamping, GB/T 34566-2017 covers automotive hot-stamping steel sheet and strip, and GB/T 44949-2024 covers intelligent hot-stamping production lines.

What does this registry search not cover?

It is a title search, so it misses standards that govern stamping without using the word: die and tooling standards, general material standards that are not stamping-specific, and automotive customer specifications. The 39 records are the family, not the whole obligation.
