Steel Structures from China: Which GB Standard Actually Governs the Sections You Buy

Last updated: 5 October 2026.

Quick answer. For structural sections from China, start from GB/T 700-2006 for carbon structural steel and the GB/T 34560 series for delivery conditions, then GB/T 11263-2024 for hot-rolled H-beams; connections sit under GB/T 1231-2024. Search by 钢结构, not 钢结构用钢: 46 records, 15 abolished.

Steel structures from China: the GB standards that govern H-beams, structural plates and bolted connections, which editions are current, and the searches that return nothing.

Every standard number, title, status and date on this page comes from the National Standards Information Public Service Platform (`std.samr.gov.cn`), the Chinese state platform that publishes the national standard register, searched by title on 5 October 2026. The searches, the counts they returned and the retrieved rows are recorded in the source table at the end.

The short version

A steel structure bought from China is not specified by one standard. The specification stack has four layers, and a buyer who names only the top one is leaving three open:

Three findings from the register are worth a buyer's attention before anything else on this page:

  1. Roughly a third of the steel-structure family is already abolished. A title search for 钢结构 returns 46 records: 29 in force, 15 abolished and 2 not yet effective. An old number on a drawing or a certificate is therefore not unusual — it is the normal state of this family.
  2. The obvious Chinese search term is a trap, in two directions. 钢结构用钢 — the literal phrase "steel for steel structures" — is not how the register titles these documents, and 焊接结构用钢 ("steel for welded structures") returns exactly 1 record, which the register marks abolished. The productive terms are 钢结构 and 结构钢.
  3. Two governing standards are not yet in force, and they matter if you are writing a specification now. GB/T 46214-2025, hot-rolled H-beams for bridge steel structures, becomes effective 1 March 2026, and GB/T 714-2025, structural steel for bridges, becomes effective 1 May 2026. A purchase specification for delivery after those dates should name them.

How this page fits the rest of this site

How this page was built, and where it stops

The platform searched here is a title index. A term either appears in a standard's title or it does not; the search is not a full-text search, and a standard that governs steel structures without naming them in the title will not appear in these counts.

Three consequences the reader should carry through the tables below:

The register is also the only source used. No ASTM, EN, ISO or JIS number appears on this page, and no mapping between the GB system and any other system is attempted, because no mapping was retrieved from a source.

What the register returns for steel structures

Title searches run on 5 October 2026. "Reported" is the total the platform prints; "retrieved" is the number of rows actually returned and read.

Two rows need a note, because a reader who skims the table will misread them:

The material layer: what the register lists as current

These are the current national entries that a structural steel specification most often has to name. Status and dates are read from the register, not from the standard's text.

StandardTitle (this page's translation)IssuedEffectiveStatus
GB/T 700-2006carbon structural steel2006-11-012007-02-01in force

The part numbering matters in practice: part 6 is the one that names seismic-resistant building steel, and part 5 is the one that names atmospheric-corrosion resistance. A drawing that says only "structural steel, GB/T 34560" has not chosen between them.

The section layer: H-beams and their relatives

Every entry below was returned by a title search for 热轧H型钢 — the Chinese term for hot-rolled H-beams. Five of its ten records are in force.

StandardTitle (this page's translation)IssuedEffectiveStatus
GB/T 11263-2024hot-rolled H-beams and split T-sections2024-10-262025-05-01in force

GB/T 46214-2025hot-rolled H-beams for bridge steel structures2025-08-292026-03-01not yet effective

GB/T 11263-2024 is the general one. The other five are application-specific: piles, prefabricated buildings, offshore work, railway masts and bridges. A structural drawing for a building does not need the offshore or catenary standard, and a drawing that cites the general one usually is not claiming the application-specific distinctions.

The connection layer: bolted assemblies

A steel structure fails at its connections more often than in its members, and the register treats connections as their own family. A title search for 钢结构用高强度 returns 14 records, of which 4 are in force.

StandardTitle (this page's translation)IssuedEffectiveStatus
GB/T 1231-2024high-strength large-hexagon-head bolt assemblies for steel structures2024-09-292025-04-01in force

GB/T 33943-2017high-strength anchor-bolt assemblies for steel structures2017-07-122018-02-01in force

Note the shape of this table. The 2008 entry is still in force, and it is not simply an older version of the 2024 one: it covers a different bolt type. An assembly bought as "high-strength bolts" can be either, and the two are not substitutes. The same applies to the weathering-steel and anchor-bolt entries.

The protection and process layer

StandardTitle (this page's translation)IssuedEffectiveStatus
GB/T 28699-2012general technical conditions for protective coating of steel structures2012-09-032013-03-01in force
GB 14907-2018fire-retardant coatings for steel structures2018-11-192019-06-01in force

GB/T 32836-2016spherical bearings for building steel structures2016-08-292017-07-01in force
GB/T 37789-2019test method for cruciform joints in steel structures2019-08-302020-07-01in force

One entry here is a mandatory standard, not a recommended one. GB 14907-2018 carries a GB number, which marks a mandatory national standard; the other four carry GB/T, which marks recommended ones. That difference is described in China's GB standards and is the reason a coating supplier may treat the fire-retardant case differently from the others in this table.

Editions the register already marks as replaced

Because so much of this family is superseded, the useful question is not "is there a standard" but "is the number on this certificate the current one". The register answers that directly for each record it returns, and it is why the tables above print an "in force / abolished / not yet effective" column at all.

Three practical consequences:

What this page does not do

⚠️ Source-scope disclosure. This page uses one source: the Chinese national standard register as published on `std.samr.gov.cn`. That is deliberate — it keeps every number on the page checkable against a single official record. It also means the page inherits that source's limits, stated in full above.

⚠️ Translation. The register publishes Chinese titles only. Every English title on this page is this page's own translation, marked as such, and the Chinese term used in each search is printed beside its result. Where a translated title could be rendered differently, the Chinese search term is the checkable one.

⚠️ What was NOT used. No supplier, marketplace, trade publication, consultancy, testing laboratory or certification body contributed a fact to this page. The Bing autosuggest evidence behind the topic choice informed only the decision to write the page; no autosuggest string is cited as a fact anywhere above.

Frequently asked questions

Which GB standard governs hot-rolled H-beams from China?

GB/T 11263-2024, hot-rolled H-beams and split T-sections, issued 26 October 2024 and effective 1 May 2025. Application-specific H-beam standards sit beside it for piles (GB/T 32285-2024), prefabricated buildings (GB/T 43893-2024), offshore structures (GB/T 34103-2017), railway catenary masts (GB/T 34199-2017) and bridges (GB/T 46214-2025, effective 1 March 2026).

Is Chinese structural steel covered by a mandatory standard?

The material standards in this family are recommended — every one of GB/T 700-2006, the GB/T 34560 series and GB/T 11263-2024 carries a GB/T number. The mandatory entries that appeared in these searches are elsewhere in the family, and in the protection layer GB 14907-2018 for fire-retardant coatings carries a GB number.

Why does searching "steel for welded structures" return almost nothing?

A title search for 焊接结构用钢 returns exactly 1 record on 5 October 2026, and the register marks that record abolished. The register titles these documents by the structure or the section, not by the welding process. A title search for 冷弯空心型钢 returns 2 records and both are abolished, for the same reason.

How many of the steel-structure standards are out of date?

A title search for 钢结构 returns 46 records: 29 in force, 15 abolished and 2 not yet effective. The proportion is similar in the wider 结构钢 term, where 47 of 85 records are abolished. That is the normal state of a family this old, and it is why checking the year suffix against the register matters more here than in most categories.

Can I use this page to check a mill certificate?

No. The register says what the Chinese state has published and whether each record is currently in force. Whether a specific mill's steel conforms to any of these standards is established by inspection.
